Surprisingly, Toronto’s God Made Me Funky is not as well known as they should be. It’s a shame since they’re a group that has been receiving many accolades, including a recent Juno nomination. This should hopefully change with their latest album, Enter The Beat; a strong recording that will make Torontonians sit up and take notice.

Enter The Beat is a glorious fuse of funk, rock, hip-hop and RnB. The album’s eleven tracks samples from each of these genres and produces a powerful sound. Similar to the Black Eyed Peas, God Made Me Funky is comprised of two singers (Kaybe and Lynzie Kent), an MC (PHATT al) and various musicians (Cam Dougall, Rich Grossman, Arthur Kerekes, Benji Perosin, Al Witz and Danny Argyle). By being a band full of diverse musical backgrounds, God Made Me Funky places an emphasis on creativity. There is no longer a heavy reliance on just a DJ spinning records for musical accompaniment. Enter The Beat proves all this with its unique presentation.

The album kicks of with “Revolshun,” a song full of fast-paced beats and creative lyrics that immediately captures the listener’s attention. This is followed by “Bringin’ It Back,” which features a great build up, followed by a catchy delivery. Enter The Beat continues with more impressive tracks. Some, like “Too Shy,” have a primarily funk sound; while others, like “Luv T’Day,” have a primarily rock sound. There are also songs like “2 Times,” which perfectly blends the aforementioned styles, along with a hint of hip-hop and RnB.

More importantly, Enter The Beat is not an album that can be listened to while sitting. The funk and rock rifts are so hypnotic, you cannot help but get up and dance. This album induces movement. It encourages the listener to use all their senses in order to get the full experience. Believe me, it’s worth the effort.

God Made Me Funky is a band that should be fully embraced by this city. There is no other group or musician that best represents Toronto’s music scene better than these guys. Proof of this can be found with Enter The Beat; an album that provides more than just a collection of songs.
