![]() Georgian Bay Photography By: Mike Grandmaison Price: $45.00 (Can$) Reviewed By: Shawn Shapiro Mike Grandmaison definitely knows his way around a camera and that can fully seen in the breathtaking new photo anthology “Georgian Bay” from Key Porter Books. His pictures know how to dazzle the mind and intrigue your eyes. His lens captures remarkable photos which speak louder than words. Mike was a resident of Georgian Bay for over two and a half decades. To achieve these gorgeous pictures no amount of hard physical labour was spared (pictures were taken by foot, canoe, kayak, sailboat, etc). It can be seen clearly how he took his time and put in much effort to put together this strong collection of pictures. At first look even though the cover is a dazzling picture of a clear lake and a luscious island, one could think how could anyone fill 227 pages full of pictures that could keep you flipping? Mike was definitely up to the task since each picture seems to top the one that came before it. The brief synopsises that brief the readers are concise yet fit the mood perfectly. The pictures all speak for themselves and form a quasi-story of the landscapes they encompass. To say which are the best pictures is a daunting task, since each in its own right had a reason of superiority. On page 17, the picture of South Philip Edward Island is striking with its baby blue lake, even lighter blue sky and its tan coloured mountain-esque view. On page 31 we see a foggy dawn at George Lake in Kilarney which is awe inspiring. On page 75 we see a gorgeous Chikanishing River with two lone kayakers, while page 166 brings us the beauty of fallen rocks at Halfway Log Dump. Mike has crafted an amazing array of pictures with a unified goal which is to show the world the beauty which is Georgian Bay. This anthology is definitely worth a full viewing. If pictures are your cup of tea this book will have you captivated from cover to cover. So if you cannot get enough of the beauty of Georgian Bay you should definitely see the work of Mike Grandmaison which is “Georgian Bay”. Interview with Mike Grandmaison Q: What Was Your Inspiration for this Book of the Collection of Photographs? A: It (Georgian Bay) is a beautiful part of the country. I was born and raised in Sudbury and it is a great place to explore! Q: What is your favourite picture of the lot of them? A: Some are very interesting, from pictures of parts of Kilarney to pictures of Bruce Peninsula. Some photos were taken on foot, some by car and some by way of boat. There were even some of little islands no one has seen, they are so unique. Q: What is the defining picture in the book? A: The cover is amazing since it is of Kilarney! One of my favourites are the pictures of Northern/Eastern Georgian Bay. My very favourite is of the Key River. Q: So what’s next for you career wise? A: A book on Muskoka is already photographed and I am working on a book on Ontario for 2010. |
