 Band/Musician: Manon’s Dream Album: Time Sensitive Angels Label: Alleged Iguana Music By: Eric Rosenhek There is always appreciation towards an artist who takes risks. Whether there is success or failure, the artist can take solace in the fact that he/she made an attempt to make something memorable. Such is the case with Time Sensitive Angels, the debut CD from Manon’s Dream. The Brampton group – comprised of Manon Zlamal, Lilian Zlamal and Randall Cousins – has taken the risk of fusing an 80’s electronic sound with country and pop style lyrics. This mash up creates a unique presentation of danceable songs and mellow dramatic tales of love and romance. Almost every track pays homage to a style of music that once filled various dance clubs. The potent synthesizers and space-age sound will propel the listener to a time when leg warmers and large and eccentric hairstyles were in vogue. There might even be memories of original Electric Circus episodes. Adding to the throwback sound are lyrics that were originally written for pop and country songs, but easily fit in with the electronic presentation. The country style lyrics, combined with the distinctive sound, provide the album’s strongest tracks. The lead off track, a cover of Tammy Wynette’s “D-I-V-O-R-C-E,” is a perfect mixture of 80’s electronica and a classic country tale of heartbreak. The Zlamal sisters’ vocals are ideal for the country genre and perhaps match up with other legendary female country performers like Wynette and Loretta Lynn. Overall, Time Sensitive Angels features solid original material such as “Double Play,” “Dimension” and “Elusive One.” The album also produces a collection of unique covers, including Leslie Gore’s “You Don’t Own Me,” Little Peggy March’s “I Will Follow Him” and Red Sovine’s “Phantom 309.” Anyone who partied during 1980’s, enjoys songs about the perils of love, or has an interest in experimental fuses of musical genres, will appreciate the risks that have been taken by Manon’s Dream.
