Band/Musician: Ron Sexsmith
Album: Exit Strategy of the Soul
Label: Warner Music

By Eric Rosenhek

Ron Sexsmith can be considered as a toned down version of Elton John. Both musicians create similar compositions and are truly talented. But while John focuses on his music and his glamorous, over-the-top presentation, Sexsmith focuses solely on his songs. The St. Catherines native proves this with his new album, Exit Strategy of the Soul.

This latest album features 14 tracks that blend pop and folk sounds. Similar to John’s orchestral influenced music, Sexsmith also exhibits a coziness that is reminiscent to Anne Murray, and a soulful resonance that matches Al Green. Furthermore, Sexsmith rises above these comparisons to ensure that his own gifted style takes precedent.

Exit Strategy of the Soul’s strongest quality is that it’s very approachable. Every song is gentle and smooth. You will never feel pressured or coursed to feel a certain way. Sexsmith gives a poetic sound and allows the listener to form their own opinion. He is never intense, but still leaves an impact. You can tell Sexsmith is a true musician as he only strives for excellence, without relying on heavy technological additions. If all he has is a guitar and a piano, that’s all he’ll need.

The album’s 14 songs include “This Is How I Know,” a perfect tune for anyone who appreciates a well-structured composition; and “One Last Round,” which captures an Elton John-esque sound. There’s also “Brandy Alexander,” which Sexsmith co-wrote with Feist.

For those who have never heard Ron Sexsmith, Exit Strategy of the Soul is a suitable introduction. The music on this album has the right amount of effort and emotion. There is also a sense of calm expressed, allowing for a comfortable environment.
